Email to Eva:

Great to hear from you! I’m ok.
I have had very limited access to the net so now I have a chance to write
you… Been shooting a lot, was very involved with the Sowetan community.
I even was hanging out with gang members from Deep Soweto, further I tried
to photograph the contrasts here in Soweto and daily life. Baptisings,
traditional medicine, schools, slums; I have been around.
I know 12 days is kind of short, but I have been using my time going out
for 15 hours per day. It really beats having only 1 or 2 days.
It has been an experience I will not easily forget. I have made many
friends here. Once you start walking around 24/7 great oppertunities come
up…… This is the problem, white people don’t come around the hood
because they fear. The fear is not justified in my opinion. You just have
to open up, respect and show a genuine interest. People have been more
than friendly. Soweto is a great place, made by great people. My new name
is ‘Lumu’ (white man). Thanks for dropping me a line…
